Farres

    Uno de los compositores de música popular más apreciado y querido y cuyo triunfo mundial enorgullece a Cuba, cuna de muchos compositores de fama internacional es Oslvaldo Farrés.
    Entre los mas conocidos creadores de música podemos citar a René Touzet, Felo Bergaza, Isolina Carrillo, José Carbó Menéndez, Felix B. Caignet, Juan Bruno Terraza, Orlando de la Rosa, Bobby Collazo, Ernestina Lecuona, Margarita Lecuona, Chano Pozo, Pedro Junco, Eduardo Davidson, Bola de Nieve y muchos otros que harían interminable esta lista.
    Farrés nació en enero de 1902. Su entrañable compañera ha dedicado su vida a mantener vivo el recuerdo de su esposo de muchos años, a la que dedicó su canción “Toda una Vida” y así fue como se llamó el homenaje “post mortem” que resultó en un magnífico espectáculo en el teatro Park de Union City, Nueva Jersey el 23 de septiembre de 1995 en conmemoración del décimo aniversario de su desaparición terrenal. En este espectáculo actuaron figuras muy conocidas de la farándula quienes interpretaron la música del fenecido compositor muy conocido como el “Compositor de Moda”, los que expresaron que aquel acto era “un sueño anhelado por todos.” Se tituló “Toda una Vida.”
    La presencia y actuación entusiasta de artistas muy conocidos le dieron realce al acto como “Meme” Solís quien comentó que su viuda había sido su guía, su musa inspiradora.
    Los artistas invitados interpretaron canciones de la autoría de Farrés: Claudia Montenegro cantó “Para que Sufras”, Demetrio Alfonso “Yo te perdono”, Estelita Santaló “Por qué me dejas”. De Miami vino Pedro Ramón que cantó “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás”, número que Doris Day dió a conocer en una película junto al actor Rock Hudson (Maybe,Maybe,Maybe). La chinita Hilda Lee ejecutó la canción “En el Mar” y Claudina Alfonso en “Estas Equivocada.”
    La excelsa bailarina Oneida Quevedo bailó “Toda una Vida” en flamenco. Irene Farach (mezzo) interpretó “Ansiedad”, “Anoche me llamó mi amor” con acompañamiento de guitarra y a duo con Memé Solís “Motívame”. El ballet de Oneida Quevedo con Hilda Lee y Pedro Ramón en “Chinito Tú” que fue otra gran sorpresa.
    Actuaron las hermanas Márquez en “Mis cinco hijos” que fue la primera canción que lo llevó a la fama; Luisa María Güell con su voz privilegiada interpretó “No me vayas a Engañar”, “Acércate Más” y “Toda una Vida”. Finita Farrés esposa-viuda cantó “Toda una Vida” que demostró la calidad artística de su compañero y “Que voy a hacer con este corazón.”
    Al final del espectáculo, el grupo completo del elenco artístico, cantó a coro “Madrecita” ...una canción que ha recorrido el mundo que el compositor dedicó a la autora de sus días. En realidad, “Madrecita” es un himno a las Madres. El eco de su nombre se escucha en todas partes, así como “Dime si te vas conmigo.”
    En verdad Farrés fue un compositor romántico. Compuso muchas canciones de amor, las que aún a pesar de los muchos años de su fallecimiento viven en la memoria de los amantes de la buena música popular.
    Farrés se dio a conocer con su “Bar Melódico”. Antes había sido empresario de una agencia de publicidad confeccionando propaganda comercial para empresas como “La Polar”, “El Encanto”, y “Jabón Llave”. Era un buen pintor y esto lo ayudó muchísimo en su trabajo de publicidad. Muchos cuadros (pinturas) de su mano ágil son conservados por su viuda. El “Bar Melódico” duró 13 años en la antigua CMQ de Monte y Prado en la Habana. Allí Miguelito Valdés, esa gloria de Cuba, le estrenó “Mis Cinco Hijos”. También lo hizo la inmensa artista La India de Oriente.
    Farrés tenía una exuberancia y fertilidad musical a pesar de no ser un buen pianista. El mismo decía que sabía de piano lo suficiente para componer pero no era un concertista.
    Otras canciones famosas son “Acércate Más”, “Déjame Quererte”, “Para que Sufras” y “Tres Palabras”. Farrés viajó por varios países donde popularizó sus canciones: Argentina, Brasil y Méjico son buena muestra de ello.
    Cantantes de fama mundial le estrenaron y popularizaron muchas de sus canciones; Pedro Vargas, que fue su buen amigo, le estrenó “Quizás, quizás, quizás” que llegó hasta Hollywood. Otros intérpretes de sus canciones que podemos mencionar son: Fernando Allende, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis y Maurice Chevalier. Su canción “Come close to me”, (Acércate Más) llegó a la pantalla de Hollywood.
    Uno de los más tristes momentos de su vida fue cuando perdió a su madre. Así compuso, ya en el exilio, “Tristeza” y “Acaríciame.”
    La “Época de Oro” de su arte fue la década de 1940-1950 llamada con razón “Década de Oro de la Música Cubana”. Farrés comenzó escribiendo guarachas pero después se volvió a la canción romántica.
    En 1942, Walt Disney lo contrató para la música de su película “Hello Amigos”. Muchos artistas le pedían canciones para estrenárselas como Nat King Cole, Trini López, Chela Campos y Maurice Chevalier. Orquestas Europeas paseaban su música por muchos países. Mapy Cortés interpretó y grabó en película “En el Mar” y también María Antonieta Pons, Antonio Prieto, Los Rufinos y otros.
    Farrés estuco casado con su esposa, Finita del Peso por 33 años que terminaron al fallecer Farrés en 1985. (Finita conoció a Farrés en el año 1942).
    El gran tenor Venezolano Alfredo Sadel, con su voz privilegiada le popularizó su canción “Súplica”. Ya poco antes de morir, compositor y cantante se reunieron en Nueva York. Sadel le rindió un homenaje en el “Rincón Taíno” del bajo Manhattan, obsequiándolo con un concierto de sus canciones favoritas y también algunas de otros compositores.
    José José y Xiomara Alfaro fueron también buenos amigos de Farrés y le interpretaron muchas de sus canciones favoritas.
    Las que produjeron más beneficio económico (Royalty) son: “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” por Bing Crosby en inglés, El Trío Servando Díaz en “Acércate Más” y “Tres palabras”.
    Farrés abandonó Cuba rumbo al exilio el 23 de diciembre de 1962, pero fuera de su patria siguió componiendo. Murió el 22 de diciembre de 1985 sentado en su casa de North Bergen frente al televisor.
    La fructífera vida de Farrés estuvo llena de triunfos y nos hará seguir recordándole como un ejemplo del impulso creador del Cubano.
