Junio, sexto mes de nuestro calendario, estaba dedicado, según el poeta Ovidio, a la diosa JUNO esposa de Júpiter, protectora de los matrimonios y de los nacimientos. De hecho, los romanos le dedicaban en este mes un importante festival que comenzaba en su día primero.

Sin embargo, hay otra interpretación que sostiene que junio rinde homenaje a Junius Brutus. Entre paréntesis, hubo dos Junius Brutus famosos en la historia de Roma: el primero, Lucius Junius Brutus, fue el primer cónsul romano y vivió en el siglo VI A.C. Se dice de él que lideró la conspiración que derrocó al séptimo y último de los legendarios reyes de Roma. El segundo, Marcus Junius Brutus, fue un político romano que nació en el año 85 y murió en el 42 A.C. Estudió filosofía y retórica en Atenas. Fue uno de los asesinos de Julio César, acción por la cual se le conoce en todo el mundo. Cicerón le admiraba por sus dotes de oratoria.

Otros piensan que proviene de «juniores» (jóvenes) en latín y que junio estaba dedicado a ellos.

Lo cierto es que junio ha sido tradicionalmente preferido por las parejas para llevar a cabo sus nupcias y que las bodas son siempre muchas en junio.

Durante este mes, el sol pasa de géminis a cáncer, con lo cual comienza el verano en el hemisferio norte y el invierno en el hemisferio sur.
