es el quinto mes de nuestro calendario contemporáneo. Sin embargo, en el primitivo calendario romano, era el tercer mes del año, pasando a ocupar el quinto lugar a partir de la reforma del mismo ordenada por Julio César. Eso sí, siempre ha tenido 31 días.

Unos suponen con grandísima razón que mayo toma su nombre de la diosa romana Maia (Maya), hija de Atlas y madre de Mercurio, diosa de la primavera y del crecimiento.

Otros dicen que el mes recibió su nombre en honor de los «Majores», sector del Senado romano compuesto por los miembros más antiguos.

Hay una tercera versión, muy parecida, que asume que mayo estaba dedicado a los ancianos en general.

Era durante el mes de mayo que continuaban los juegos romanos «Floralia destinados a la diosa Flora, que habían comenzado en abril.

Durante esas fiestas, hombres, mujeres y niños reunían la mayor cantidad posible de flores para adornar las imágenes de esa diosa. Quizás es por eso que mayo y las flores van siempre muy unidos en nuestro subconsciente.

De hecho, mayo nos trae un mensaje de florecimiento, de renacer, de vuelta al calor después del invierno, si vivimos en el hemisferio septentrional. Claro que los que viven en el hemisferio sur, en cambio, ven en mayo el mes anunciador de la llegada del invierno.

Una de las conmemoraciones mundiales del mes de mayo es el «Día del Trabajo», que se celebra desde 1890 como homenaje a las grandes manifestaciones organizadas para reivindicar el derecho de los trabajadores a la jornada laboral de ocho horas.
